Gloucestershire Manor
This steeply sloping garden surrounding a historic Cotswold manor house has been completely redesigned as part of a complex programme of building works over a period of several years. Chameleon Design was entrusted with the challenge of remaining sensitive to the history and character of the site and its rural landscape setting, while accommodating features such as an underground swimming pool with lawn suitable for cricket practice on the roof; another flat lawn big enough for a sizeable marquee; and shelter from strong winds, while preserving the wonderful valley views. Complex level changes required numerous retaining walls and flights of steps, faced in traditional Cotswold stone.
In such an extensive garden, there was scope to create areas of different character. A secluded, shady area of existing trees was planted up as a Glade Garden with arched pergolas framing the views; the sheltered courtyard between the manor house and the glass front of the new underground pool room was given a sleek and contemporary finish with a clean-lined water feature and characterful Magnolia tree; mature Yew hedging creates a formal frame to the front entrance area; and the lowest terrace of the garden is given a more relaxed character with a long reflecting lily pond, and flowering meadow planting. Elsewhere, traditional roses and herbaceous borders frame a lawn, while a secluded sunken garden is planted in sultry tones of deep reds and purples. Next to the house there is a traditional character with stone and cobble paving set among fragrant lavender and herbs.
There are still details to finish, lights to fit, but this beautiful garden already feels as though it belongs, and it will go from strength to strength in years to come.
