The Design Process

The design process

After visiting the site and meeting with you to discuss your requirements, we will send you a written quote seting out the scope of works, our fees and conditions of appointment. Once this is agreed, we will revisit to take a detailed brief and measure up the garden. We then summarise your brief in writing and when this is approved, we draw up outline proposals, usually using 3D computer modelling (Sketchup) in addition to hand drawn plans. We find Sketchup really helps clients to visualise and understand the proposals, especially in enclosed spaces or where changes of level are involved. Only when you are happy with this sketch stage do we draw up the masterplan. The final scale masterplan shows all areas of hard surfacing with existing and proposed levels, materials, edge treatments etc; planting areas; and any walls, steps, pergolas, water features or other structures /features. Lighting proposals will be included if required, and we can arrange for a lighting specialist to draw up a technical specification to supplement this.

Site survey

All our designs are based on a thorough survey and analysis of the site, including, where appropriate, its setting. On smaller sites we can take measurements & levels, to draw up a plan of the site as existing. On larger, more complex sites, a professional land survey may be required, and we can arrange this for you.

We can prepare cost estimates, although inevitably for the more complex, bespoke gardens this will be a ‘ball park’ figure until it has been priced by contractors. Where you have a limited budget, we will take care to respect this.
